Mentorship in Action: Gaining from United College Alumni AGM Through Senior Support

Fortunate to join the United College Alumni Association’s Annual General Meeting, courtesy of my senior mentor Cheong from CUHK’s United College. Post-graduation, I’ve seldom engaged in alumni functions, but a recent hiking outing organized by the college introduced me to Cheong, sparking this opportunity.

Cheong exemplifies generosity toward juniors, sharing wisdom without reservation. Upon learning about my startup endeavors, he not only linked me with key figures but also invited me to the AGM for introductions to veteran members. There, I connected with the HKSEC founder—another United College graduate—opening doors to fresh insights on fostering ventures in Hong Kong’s ecosystem.

The evening wrapped with a delightful Chinese dinner at the Lawn Bowls Club restaurant, graciously hosted by our senior sister. Sharing the table with such distinguished individuals left me motivated, absorbing subtle lessons on leadership and perseverance that define excellence.

Heartfelt thanks once more to Cheong for his guidance—it’s gestures like these that propel emerging entrepreneurs forward.

Networking Gains: Fruitful Connections at HKSEC’s Startup Mixer

This afternoon, I represented SilverGuard AI at a valuable mixer hosted by HKSEC, designed to link emerging entrepreneurs with seasoned veterans. These sessions provide a platform for fresh faces in business to exchange ideas and gain wisdom from those who’ve navigated similar paths.

A highlight was reconnecting with Frank, a respected senior I first encountered through activities at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He’s straightforward and grounded, offering direct, actionable insights into our operations. His sharp perspective, honed by years in the field, has us rethinking elements of our strategy to enhance practicality and impact.

Equally rewarding was bumping into Phoebe, someone I knew from a prior IT firm. Though our roles never overlapped, the shared background sparked immediate rapport. Her diligent and supportive nature shone through as she shared thoughtful tips on elevating our visibility in the health tech space.

All in, the event proved highly productive. Moving forward, I’ll prioritize more of these interactions to expand my outlook and sharpen my skills as a business leader.
